Abstract
The problem of mass transfer in a hollow-fibre artificial kidney performing simultaneous dialysis and ultrafiltration is formulated as a well-defined duct convective mass transfer problem. Such assumptions are made as are satisfied in test dialyser. An analytical solution for the concentration profile in the duct is obtained by using variable separation method. The necessary requirement that the solution must tend to pure dialysis case solution in the limit ultrafiltration tending to zero is fulfilled. Exact analytical expressions are derived for the eigenconstants of the solution. In using the solution, Sherwood numbers are emphasized as they provide useful guidelines for optimizations and design of the artificial kidney. Various types of Sherwood numbers are defined and studied.
